About six months ago Bill came to me to become a client. He was frustrated and, frankly, very angry. "Look what I've been doing," he said despondently, pushing a spreadsheet across the desk toward me. The spreadsheet was broken down into to columns containing lots of dates and numbers. It featured a thoughtfully worded "objective" statement explaining his goals and preferences. Then it carefully documented his work history in reverse chronological order. Finally, he wrapped it up with personal information and his educational credentials. Then he pointed to the numbers on the spreadsheet. Each week he had sent his resume and a cover letter to dozens of ads he found in newspapers and magazines. He had posted it on a dozen job websites. Another column showed the number of agencies and recruiters he had written to. After three weeks he started another column indicating companies and organizations he had approached directly with a letter or email and a resume. He had gotten them from the yellow pages. After eight weeks he repeated the whole process. Only this time he doubled the numbers. Over the period of four months he had mailed and e-mailed hundreds and hundreds of resumes. "You've been very busy," I asserted. He scowled as he flipped open the results page. It was almost empty. "This is ridiculous! I got a couple calls from some agency who wanted additional information. Then I got several form letters from companies who said they had received my resume and would keep it on file for six months. And I heard from some guy who tried to recruit me for a network marketing scheme. But I did get invited in for one interview." "Really?" I said. "How'd that go?" "I thought it went well," Bill responded. "But I never heard from them again. Then I got a letter a couple weeks later. They told me they picked someone else." "Did you call any of these folks back," I inquired. "Naw. I'm no good on the phone. Besides, with my qualifications I don't see why I should have to. But after all this I have the feeling I may be a LOSER." THE 6 BIGGEST MISTAKES

But if you want to make a SUBSTANTIAL MOVE and do it FAST, this is definitely not the way to go.
3. Shotgunning your resume. The theory goes something like this: if I throw enough paper into the market, the law of averages has to work for me. At some point someone will want me. WRONG! The only law at work here is that the printing company, the post office and the job websites are going to get rich. Don't waste your time sending a resume if it's not specifically targeted. Broad distribution of your resume is the least productive way to look for a job.
4. Failure to follow up. Don't even bother with a job search campaign at all if you don't plan to follow up personally -- by phone, mail and email. It's that old competition thing again. You have to get your foot in the door ahead of the pack. And don't expect an interview to lead to anything if you don't follow up by phone and letter.
5. Waiting for the phone to ring. Is there anything worse than waiting nervously for someone important to call you back . . . especially when you think they're supposed to? If your attitude is, "I've got great looking credentials, lots of experience, an excellent work history . . . so here I am -- come get me!". . . you're in for a long, long job search. You have to take the initiative. Pick up the phone and find out what's happening.
