Someone was fussing at my office door. Pretty ominous beginning for a new client, I remember thinking. Then I recognized the voice. It was loudly protesting the new sign I had hung up proudly announcing to the world:
“JOB HUNTING? WORLD’S FASTEST JOB SEARCH!
Lock up a high-paying job in 14 days or less!”
It was only Teddy. Well, not only Teddy. Teddy is a good friend. Probably my best promoter. Teddy has sent me lots of clients over the years. I'm Paul Bowley. And my firm, Executive Excellence International, has been a world class leader in alternative non-traditional job search since 1985.
Teddy didn’t look good. “I’ve been let go,” he announced. His face was a mixture of defeat and hurt.
“Teddy,” I exclaimed, “that’s great news!”
He looked at me with quizzical disbelief as he slouched into a chair. “What are you smoking?” he grumbled humorlessly.
“No, I’m serious,” I replied brightly. “Look, Teddy,” I reassured him, grasping him by both shoulders, “I can make this work for you.
Teddy never looked up. “Listen, friend, I just lost my job. I got a wife and kids, a mortgage, a car to pay off and bills coming outta both ears. And you wanna do your number on me? Gimme a break. I love ya, man, but I really got more important things to do right now . . . like finding work fast!”
“But, Teddy,” I pleaded, “what if I told you I have a plan that can wrap up an offer in 14 days or less? What if I helped you meet face-to-face with your new boss in the next three days? What if I showed you how to lock up a better opportunity than the one you had and cut a better deal for more money? Would that light your candle?”
I was getting through. There was a glimmer of hope in Teddy’s eyes. The drawn expression on his face faded as the corners of his mouth struggled with a grin. I knew I had his attention. But my toughest work was still ahead . . . making Teddy a believer by showing him how to get results FAST. I rolled up my sleeves and went to work for my new client.
