ANSWERS to Job Search Resume Readiness Test

1. False. Never include your age or references to it in your job search resume. You don’t want to be excluded from consideration in advance because someone thinks you may be to old or too young.

2. False. Studies have shown that most employers will initially scan your resume in 50 seconds or less. Therefore, one high-impact page is preferable. Any more than two is a waste.

3. True. If you include salary information, you give up any negotiating power. An employer will now know how little to pay you in spite of how much the job is actually worth.

4. True. Employers love it when you include references. But don’t do it. You don’t want an employer to check your references prematurely. Wait until you’re ready to have them contacted.

5. False. See answer #2. Employers quickly scan your resume to see if anything pops out at them. If the see something of interest, they will set your resume aside for a more detailed reading later. So you must be brief, succinct and assertive.

6. False. Don’t let a photo knock you out of the running. You may think you look terrific. But something about your looks or the way you dress could be a turn-off. And you just lost an opportunity to show an employer how you could make a difference.

7. False. Resumes don’t get jobs. People do. No one is going to hire you on the basis of your resume without a quality face-to-face meeting.

8. False. Your sense of fair play is commendable. Employment problems do need to be addressed. But not in your resume. Save your concerns for a face-to-face meeting where you can decide if a problem might hinder your candidacy.

9. True. Most resumes, unfortunately, read like obituaries. Employers want to get a sense about how you could make a contribution going forward . . . not a dull rehash of your work history. Your resume should be a bright, attractive promotional document. 10. False. In fact, it’s the slowest way with no guarantee that an employer will even see it. By far, the fastest, most effective way is to get a personal introduction.

11. False. All it does is give the employer a unique advantage if a job is offered. Do you think they will offer you substantially more than what you’ve indicated even though the new job may be worth substantially more? Do not include any compensation information in your resume.

12. True. They love it. It gives them a leg up because they can screen you out in advance if you don’t fit the salary profile. You’ll never even get the chance to to show what you can do.

13. False. For best results always direct your approach to the person you would be reporting to.

14. False. In fact, the longer you can hold off showing your resume, the better. Things will work out a lot better for you if you’re able to build up a relationship before being considered as a job candidate.

15. True. It’s a fact. Most resume contain glaring disqualifiers that can sabotage your chances, e.g. a mention of age, salary, termination, unemployment, length of time on one job, slow growth, lateral moves, problem employment gaps, etc.
